Allopathy

Allopathy is the treatment of symptoms of a disease by unrelated substances. This was the practice of medicine in its early years and is now considered to be harmful. The idea was to purge the body of whatever was producing the disease. This was done by inducing evacuation (vomiting, diarrhoea, blood letting, suppuration, etc) with irritants and poisons.

The word comes from the Greek words allos  (other).
