Are You Terrified of Flying?

The Patient Vanishes

I’m sure you’ve heard of those people who are terrified of flying. Maybe you’re one of them. It seems to me to be very logical. You didn’t evolve to be propelled at high speed through the air in a tiny tin box. So you don’t have the senses to equip yourself with the experience.

I’m just surprised that so few people are frightened of flying.

So you’ve guessed it, this week’s remedy is focussed on the fear of flying.

This remedy has the combination of claustrophobia, with a fear of heights, with suggestibility and impulses. Putting them all together, it’s pretty easy to see why it can help.

Being cooped up in a tiny tin box gives you the heebie jeebies on its own. Then looking out of the window doubles that experience.

Then along comes someone who thinks it’s funny to tell you about plane crashes and your heebie jeebies turns into downright fear.

Some people are frightened of heights because they are not absolutely certain they won’t be tempted to jump over the side. I think most people have had that sort of experience once or twice. It’s a hint of an impulse, most easily control. But those needing this remedy are more prone to impulses than most people.

So now the fear turns into terror and is well into overdrive.

The remedy under discussion here is Argentum (silver) nitricum or Arg nit for short. It’s a nitrogen salt of silver.

I know we talked about Arg nit in December. Then it was related to overdoing the sugary things, with only a cursory mention of the fear of flying.  This goes to show how diverse homoeopathic remedies are. Whoever else would connect a fear of flying, with ailments from eating too much sugar, to anticipation anxiety, except homoeopaths?

Weird lot, aren’t we?

But boy, are we useful!

The keynotes of Argent nit are:-

  • claustrophobia, feels trapped
  • fear of heights
  • suggestible nature
  • impulsive
  • fear of flying
  • sugar poisoning, huge sweet tooth
  • anticipation anxiety, especially diarrhoea from anticipating an upcoming event

I remember hearing of someone who loved entering her dog for dog shows, but was absolutely terrified the day before, to the point of insomnia and diarrhoea. Most people who suffer that way, wouldn’t do the shows, but Argentum people also love the action, the drama, the creativity.

I also want to briefly talk about another huge remedy (polycrest) previously discussed, last year.

If you’re a budding homoeopathic student, you’ll know of the remedy Nux vomica. This comes from the Loganiaceae family and contains the poisonous alkaloid strychnine. So you know it makes a fabulously diverse remedy.

Most know Nux vomica to be a brilliant hangover remedy. And it’s also great (taking prior to drinking) in preventing hangovers.

Hangovers are all about temporary liver toxicity.

Nux vomica’s main action is on the liver.

Any remedy that had a strong liver action, also has a strong affinity to lungs and stomach.

For today, I’m focusing on the stomach side, as Nux vomica is another great remedy for motion sickness.

As the name suggests, this is a vomiting remedy.

If you have a struggling liver, you’re liable to be irritable, if not downright angry. Over nothing very much - from noise, from light, from slight causes.

Clear the liver and the anger disappears.

Nux vomicas are really cold.

So the keynotes of the motion sickness aspect of Nux vomica are

  • nausea and vomiting with a lot of retching
  • food lies heavy in your stomach
  • stomach sensitive to pressure - must loosen your clothes
  • worse being cold, early morning and over eating
  •

Nux vomica is a great colic (or a sharp stomach pain) remedy too, when you arch your back to gain some relief (horses extend their legs to hollow their back, dogs and cats will tend to stretch with their heads thrown back).

I make no apologies for repeating remedies here. The more they are talked about, the more you ‘get it”. I know from experience, how long that can take. I don’t think one lifetime is enough to get to know homoeopathy.

Vitamin D is essential for the health of your bones and teeth. This vitamin comes from the sun. Everyone needs at least half an hour’s daily exposure to the sun, on as much of their bare (no clothes, no sun screen) body as possible. Your eyes should be bare of glass, plastic, contact lens as the light needs to get in through your eyes. You don’t have to stare at the sun to receive your daily dose. But glass and plastic will prevent its entry.

And you should have no sunscreen on your skin. Not only is this harmful, it prevents the sun’s rays doing their job for you.

Stay in the shade if necessary, just get away from under glass or plastic.

Taking the synthesised version of this vitamin is not the same. Contrary to popular belief, the body doesn’t just need isolated nutrients. It needs ALL necessary nutrients, in combination, in balance and from naturally occurring food. Moreover, you can easily overdose on synthesised nutrients.

Many of our foods are fortified with the synthetic form of vitamin D - milk, soy, breakfast cereals, bread....

I avoid those foods. You can get good replacements (normally organic) without additives.

Wintertime can be a problem if there are a lot of overcast days or you live near the poles, but vitamin D occurs naturally in fish, eggs (free range) and mushrooms.

However, you just can’t beat the beneficial effects of the sun. Even in the winter, try to get as much as you can.

Sunscreen Causes Cancer!
Given the fact that just about everything you put on your skin gets absorbed into your bloodstream, it is interesting that there is a complete lack of regulation of cancer-causing ingredients in skin care products....

Natural Sunscreen for the Family
Raising children is the most difficult and rewarding thing I’ve ever done. And, while my wife and I have very different parenting strategies, we both agree on one thing:  Give the kids lots of sun exposure and never slather sunscreen on them.  Here are three reasons why;...

The Patient Vanishes
One fundamental difference between alternative and conventional medicine is the way each treats the patient. To the alternative practitioner, every patient is different, and presents a unique array of symptoms; to the conventional doctor, the patient’s case is one of many other similar ones....
