If you suffer from motion sickness, but last week’s remedy didn’t seem to ‘fit’ you, then this one might.

Before I go into that, I’d just like to say that this is clinical prescribing. I don’t like to do clinical prescribing as I prefer to find out the cause and energy behind someone’s ailment. But these eletters are all about empowering you to home prescribe. So we have to use the clinical approach.

Just bear in mind, that’s not really how homoeopathy works. So while Tabacum is one of the main motion sickness remedies, it’s only likely to help about one third of motion sickness sufferers.

Maybe.

So here’s another good one, which may help another third.

The motion sickness of this week’s remedy is better for sitting or lying down. As soon as you attempt to get up, the nausea takes over again.

This remedy doesn’t just cover motion sickness. Vertigo is a big symptom, too. This is much worse when you look at moving objects, such as riding in a car.

Of course, you can get nausea with the vertigo.

This remedy has a very strong modality in that you feel worse from loss of sleep. This modality can stand alone, so it doesn’t just mean that the motion sickness or vertigo is worse when you haven’t had much sleep.

It means that if you haven’t had much sleep, you’re badly affected. So this could be from insomnia or staying up later than you’d like to. You can get totally exhausted or chronic fatigue from lack of sleep over a long period.

Most people can catch up on loss of sleep eventually, but there are situations where you can’t. And this remedy comes into its own then. Those situations might include times when you have to be awake consistently such as when you do shift work, when you’re nursing a patient, when you’re travelling a lot, parents of small children who suffer a lot from colic, teething, etc.

This week’s remedy is called Cocculus indicus. It’s make from the Indian cockle seeds which contain picrotoxine, a powerful poison. So you know the remedy will be a pretty useful one. And it is. It has far more uses than mentioned here and covers deep pathology, beyond the scope of home prescribing.

It has been used for thousands of years, to stupefy fish, so they are easier to catch.

The keynotes of Cocculus indicus are:-

  • motion sickness

  • better sitting or lying down

  • true vertigo, the world spins

  • worse watching moving objects

  • nausea with vertigo

  • worse from loss of sleep

Vitamin A is essential to healthy bones and teeth, as well as general health.

Vitamins and minerals are interconnected. One relies on another, relies on another, relies on another to be properly utilised by the body. Isolating nutrients, so common in today’s synthetic supplements, means they can’t be properly absorbed or utilised by your body.

They may well be rich in the said nutrient, but that means nothing if it can’t be absorbed and used efficiently.

The other huge disadvantage in taking isolated nutrients is you can easily overdose on them. For example, excess vitamin A has been shown to occur at a mere 20 mg per day.  Symptoms include water in the brain (hydrocephalus), vomiting, tiredness, constipation, bone pain, dry skin and severe headaches.

Being an omnivore, you can obtain your vitamin A from meat (especially liver) and eggs or from beta carotene found in green, yellow and orange foods. Generally the deeper green or orange means the higher the beta carotene.

Green foods rich in beta carotene are green leafy vegetables (kale, spinach, bok choi, chard, watercress, fresh thyme, parsley, romaine lettuce, greens from dandelion, beet, turnip, collard, mustard), broccoli and spirulina/blue-green algae, such as the one detailed in the right hand panel.

Yellow and orange food rich in beta carotene are pumpkin, sweet potato, carrots, mangoes, cantaloupe melon, apricots, rose hips, winter squash, cassava, and especially goji berries.

Vitamin A is the only vitamin which can be over consumed from food, but you’d have to eat an awful lot of liver to do that. This is one of the reasons not to feed your dog or cat liver more than once a week.

Nature tells you not to eat too much liver, as there’s only one (relatively small)  liver in a whole carcass.

You can’t over do beta carotene from food, which converts into vitamin A in the body.

So the disadvantages of synthetic vitamin A are

  • it’s poorly absorbed

  • it’s poorly utilised

  • you can easily overdose


Conversely the advantages of eating food rich in beta carotene are

  • easily absorbed

  • in balance with other nutrients so is easily utilised

  • can’t be easily over consumed


It goes without saying that the foods mentioned here, rich in beta carotene, are high in anti oxidants too. Just about all fresh fruit and veggies are high in anti oxidants.
