Dosage
Dosage size is one pillule (very small pills) or a couple of drops. Instructions on the bottle may vary with different manufacturers, which is fine.
Dosage frequency is based on the intensity of the situation. Dose every 15 mins for four doses. Then stop and assess. If things are improving, then keep going, but now dose when you feel things are falling into a hole again. When you’re feeling good, don’t dose. This can be minutes, hours, days or even weeks apart.
However, don’t keep taking any remedy if you don’t feel some benefit after a few doses.
In the unlikely event that it does you no good, neither will it do you harm.
Potency
Potency is another name for strength. We are so fortunate in homoeopathy, as we have so many different potencies to choose from, to suit the varying needs of individual people and animals. The potency of a remedy is indicated after the name. You will commonly come across 6x, 6c, 30c, 200c. For example Aconite 30c, Silica 6x.
In general the higher the number, the greater the strength, so the better the effect will be and fewer doses required. The letter c after the number always indicates more strength than the letter x, but strength isn’t the only factor to consider.
Common potencies for remedies over the counter are 6c and 30c. These are the lower potencies which are more difficult to abuse by over dosing. (Even though homoeopathic remedies are very safe to use, taking frequent doses of a high potency can cause your problems to get worse temporarily,) These are good potencies for normal, everday home prescribing.
The more intense the situation (such as an accident or emergency), the more you will need a high potency. One way round this is to take the lower potency more frequently. However, although the lower potencies will work, they will be slower than the action under a higher potency. So a 200c potency would be much more useful. Or, if you can, see a practitioner.
I personally like to use 30c potencies in my kits, but I sell to people I can advise, and who I know will contact me when in doubt. Homoeopathic pharmacies supply the kits to shops where they don’t have this advantage, so commonly use 6c.
If you feel the remedy is really good for the situation and person, but only have it in 6c potency, be prepared to dose frequently to get the same result as that under a higher potency.
If in doubt, most homoeopaths are happy to discuss and advise over the phone.
